She has been a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours for many years and exhibits her work annually at the Mall Galleries, London

In her first year of membership of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours Shirley won the Windsor and Newton award for best paintings in the annual RI show.
Shirley's first book, Taking Risks With Watercolour was nominated for the 2005 Artists' Choice Award for art instruction book of the year.
